17th Pragueshorts Film Festival

Festival Regulations (PDF)

Article 1

The Pragueshorts Film Festival is a competitive festival of short films. Its aim is to contribute to the development and promotion of artistic short films and their production.

Article 2

Article 3

The 17th Pragueshorts Film Festival will take place in Prague during February 2022; the particular dates and venues will be announced according actual Covid-19 restrictions and situation.

Article 4

The Festival program includes the following:

  1. International Competition of short films of up to 30 minutes
  2. National Competition of short films of up to 30 minutes
  3. Labo Competition of short experimental films of up to 30 minutes
  4. non-competitive informative film sections, retrospectives, biographies, tributes and other accompanying events. The length of films in non-competitive informative sections must not exceed 30 minutes.

Article 5

Film Submissions:

1/ International Competition
Short films with live action or 3D animation of all genres, covering any topic and running time of no more than 30 minutes are eligible for consideration. Submitted films must have been produced after January 2020.

Submission fee:

  • Regular (with deadline for submission until October 31): 10 EUR
  • Late (with deadline for submissions until November 15): 20 EUR

Only Master Card, Visa or Dinners Club payments will be accepted.

2/ National Competition
Short films with live action of all genres, covering any topic and running time of no more than 30 minutes are eligible for consideration. Submitted film must have been produced after January 2021 and the production company has to be located in Czech Rep.

Submission fee:

  • Regular (with deadline for submission until October 31): 10 EUR
  • Late (with deadline for submissions until November 15): 20 EUR

Only Master Card, Visa or Dinners Club payments will be accepted.

3/ Labo Competition — the experimental films section

Submission fee:

  • Regular (with deadline for submission until October 31): 10 EUR
  • Late (with deadline for submissions until November 15): 20 EUR

4/ Midnight Program
All horror genres, bizzare stories or even disasterpieces up to 30 minutes running time are welcome! Submitted film must have been produced after January 2019.

No submission fee.

Article 6

Only films on FullHD 1920*1080 designed for PC not MacOS, preferable not ProRes with English subtitles will be eligible for the competition and non-competitive sections.

Article 7

Films will be selected by an expert committee acting as an advisory board to the Program Director. The committee, under the authority of the Program Director, will determine the program schedule and set the screening order of the films.

Accepted films may not be withdrawn from the Festival Program after official selection confirmation.

Applicants may submit their films as online screeners via entry form without any temporal limitation.

All spoken non-English films must include English subtitles.

Article 8

Screening copies of selected films (with English subtitles) intended for screening at the Festival must be sent to the Festival by January 10, 2021. There will be no exceptions to this deadline. All participants must follow instructions for shipping of (film) copies that will be sent to the participants together with the notification on film’s inclusion in the 17th Pragueshorts Film Festival program.

Film copies sent and received in accordance with the above will be screened at the Festival. No other copies will be accepted.

Article 9

Unless agreed otherwise, the participant is responsible for costs related to the transportation of the film, promotional materials and insurance (for the transportation) from the country of origin to the Customs Office in Prague. The Festival is responsible for costs related to the insurance of the film copy against loss or damage or destruction for the period from receipt of the film by the Festival until its return to the shipping agent. In case of any damage to or loss of a copy during the Festival, the Festival shall only be liable for the costs of making a new copy, based on the current laboratory rates for ordering a standard copy.

The cost of return transportation of a film copy to the sender shall be borne by the Festival.

Any complaints concerning unsatisfactory condition of a returned copy must be submitted no later than within one month after the copy was returned.

Article 10

The Festival must receive a detailed documentation for each selected film, whether for a competition or for a non-competitive section, including the following: a synopsis of the film, stills of the film, a biography and filmography of the director, an original dialogue list and its translation into English, a full list of artistic and technical credits, and an online screener.

Participation at the Festival requires submission of a film teaser, preferably in electronic form, or granting an authorisation to the Festival to produce such a teaser at the Festival’s expense to facilitate the film promotion. The length of the teasers shall not exceed 10% of the film or three minutes, as the maximum length. The participant hereby grants his/her consent to the teaser being broadcast on the Czech or international TVs and on the Internet.

Article 11

The Juries will be composed of prominent representatives of culture, film production, film theory, film critics, as well as filmmakers and producers. Individuals who participated in the making of any of the competition films are not eligible to become members of the Jury. All Jury Members are sworn to secrecy. The Festival Program Director or his representative may attend the Jury deliberations, but may take no part in the voting.

Article 12

Within the International Competition, the Jury shall present the following awards:

  • Grand Prix and EUR 3,000 for Best Short Film

Further, the Jury may award the following:

  • two Special Jury Mentions

Within the National Competition, the Jury shall present the following awards:

  • Grand Prix and EUR 2,000 for Best Short Film

Further, the Jury may award the following:

  • two Special Jury Mentions

Within Labo Competition — the experimental films section, the Jury shall present the following awards:

  • Grand Prix and EUR 1,000 for the Best Experimental Film

Financial awards will go to the director of the winning films and may not be attributed ex-aequo.

Award-winners are expected to attend the closing ceremony where awards will be presented and to mention the award as announced, nationally as well as internationally, in their publicity and promotional materials.

Article 13

Any unclear situations or cases not covered by these Regulations shall be resolved by the Management of the Prague Short Film Festival.

Article 14

Participation at the Festival is subject to acceptance of the Regulations set out herein.
