International Competition 2
The International Competition of the 20th anniversary edition of the Pragueshorts film festival presents twenty-eight films made with the involvement (thanks to international co-productions) of twenty-three countries. The participating films by new filmmakers as well as familiar names cover a range of current issues, contemporary trends, and innovative stylistic approaches. Presented in five blocks, they introduce audiences to the cinematic output of countries that only rarely make it into Czech cinemas – from Estonia and South Africa all the way to Brazil and Cambodia.
In the Chinese short Extracurricular Activity, we delve into the nightmare of every parent and adolescent girl. The British animated film Bunnyhood uses a story straight out of a horror movie to show how easily a child’s trust in its parents can be shaken. In Yonne, a man and two women float down the slow and hazy river of the film’s title toward a better future in Paris. South Africa’s Vultures reveals the shocking truth of an industry that takes advantage of people in their most vulnerable movements. France’s Dammen takes us to a mysterious pond where the hot summer air is filled with a sense of unease. And the French-Polish short Exam introduces us to a different kind of couples therapy.
English spoken or English subtitled screening. Suitable both for English speaking viewers and Czech viewers alike.
