From Brazil through Estonia to Cambodia. The International Competition will present 28 films from 23 countries

This year’s International Competition presents twenty-eight films made with the involvement of twenty-three countries. “The five blocks of films present a selection as diverse as the world of short films can possibly be. Besides the usual production powerhouses such as Western Europe and North America, the festival also introduces audiences to the cinema of countries that appear less frequently or rarely on domestic screens – for example, Estonia, South Africa, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, and Brazil,” says Pragueshorts’ director Radka Weiserová.

The selection also includes numerous films that have been screened at prestigious international festivals. Films shown at Cannes include the original Spanish-American co-production Talk Me, Portugal’s Arguments in Favor of Love (which looks at the relationship troubles of two ghosts), and the shocking South African film Vultures. The Locarno-award winning Chinese-American co-production Hyena is a nerve-racking dive into the collective agony of students at a prestigious art school. Grandma Nai Who Played Favorites, which took home an award from Sundance, is about an old woman who briefly returns from the afterlife in order to help her grandson accept himself. And Slovakia’s entry in the International Competition, Confession (winner of a Sun in the Net Award for Best Short Film) is an intimate testimony about childhood trauma. The festival’s programming team selected the final twenty-eight films from nearly 1,500 submissions.

An international jury will award one main prize in the section, accompanied by a financial award of €3,000, as well as two special mentions.
